Discovering Indre By

The “inner city” of Copenhagen offers the best attractions for any visitor. Combining medieval charm and modern comforts, historic wonders and green areas, Indre By is the “true” heart of Copenhagen. It is where the capital city actually started and the neighboring districts have expanded from, right during King Christian IV’s reign over Denmark from the 16th to the 17th centuries.

Halmtorvet at Vesterbro

What used to be a gritty and seedy area in Vesterbro is today one of the district’s attractive showpieces and a popular hang-out place for the locals. Halmtorvet (“Hay Market”) is a public square located beside the Copenhagen Central Station and a walk away from Istedgade, another popular meeting point in the area. It was originally built right in the present-day location of the City Hall Square and was for a long time the place a meat market and where numerous bales of hay and straw used for the cattle and horse stables around the city were traded.

Nyboder

Tucked quietly in the Fredriksstaden district is the historic row of houses of the Royal Danish-Norwegian Navy, part of Copenhagen’s colorful heritage and a tourist attraction. Amidst the unassuming neighborhood, the 17th century military barracks still stands proudly – the distinctive bright yellow houses with their red shingled rooftops are a reminder of the city’s strong naval forces and its history as a fortified city.

Situated between Raadhuspladsen and Kongens Nytorv is the carfree-zone of Stroget, a favorite haunt among locals and a popular site for tourists. It is said that the area has about 250,000 foot traffic per day, which peaks during the summer.

Astronomy buffs, those who like to gaze at celestial bodies or even those who just want to take in panoramic views of Copenhagen know where the best place is to do these things: the Rundetaarn or the “Round Tower.” This 17th century cylindrical tower is one of the most popular and impressive sights in the capital city of Denmark. It was designed by architect Hans van Steenwickel by orders from Christian IV as part of the Trinitatis Complex – a church, library and an observatory all together in a single building.

Heirs to the Danish Throne

The Danish Monarchy is one of the oldest surviving royal houses in the world, dating back to the 10th century to Gorm the Old of the Vikings. Originally it was an elected monarchy but because the actual practice was that the eldest son of the current monarch was elected, it was changed to a hereditary monarchy. Constitutional monarchy was created in the mid-19th century and a century later, the Act of Succession paved the way for female members of the royal family to accede the throne.
