Things to do in Greenland

Officially Greenland is an autonomous island but it is still recognized as part of the Kingdom of Denmark, and a proud one at that. It is considered the world’s largest island and with the lowest population density its beauty is largely untouched and unspoiled. The home of Santa Claus, the land of gigantic ice caps and ice bergs and where the northern lights are as common as seeing stars in the sky, Greenland is a place that should be in your bucket list whether you seek adventure or a romantic getaway. Here are some of the recommended activities to put in your list:

Copenhagen Fashion Week

Serious fashionistas and the who’s who in the fashion and design industry around the world would be descending into Copenhagen by now for the first salvo of Fashion Week 2013. Taking place on January 30 to February 3, the Copenhagen Fashion Week is among the largest and most highly-anticipated events in the Nordic Region where over 60,000 visitors come to celebrate the best of Danish and international fashion and design talents.

Wondercool Copenhagen

They call it the dead of winter in February – but not in Copenhagen. The capital city of Denmark is pulling out all stops in a month-long cultural celebration meant to lure people of all ages and with all kinds of interests. From food, music, art, cinema, architecture to fashion, take your pick from more than 100 “wonder cool” events taking place in different places all over the country.

Winter Activities in Denmark

If you think winter in Denmark means just snuggling up by a warm fireplace inside the house, think again. Even though the temperatures in Denmark average around 29-39 degrees Fahrenheit and just 7 hours of daylight during this time of the year, there are still a lot of fun things to do around. So make sure to pack your winter gear when you go to Denmark, bundle up when you go out and check out some of these fun activities:

Skandinavisk Dyrepark

It has recently gained worldwide attention because of one polar bear cub – Siku, hailed as an online sensation when a BBC produced video was shown on Youtube. But the Scandinavian Wildlife Park has been providing countless hours of informative entertainment to local families as well as visitors to Denmark for many years. Located in the city of Kolind in Djursland, the 45-hectare zoo and nature park is home to about 300 animals of 21 various species.

New Year's Eve in Copenhagen

The Danish may not appear to celebrate the New Year’s Eve as much as they do Christmas – most locals actually prefer greeting the first day of the new year at home with their family and close friends. But in the capital city of Denmark, there would be plenty of fun parties and events especially for the younger set.

The Black Sun in Denmark

This is one of nature’s most breathtaking phenomena that can only be seen in Denmark, and witnessing this should be in any nature lover’s bucket list. The Sol Sort (“Bird Flock”) is the term used to describe the amazing formations of hundreds of thousands of migrating European starlings as they head to their breeding grounds or the next comfortable place for resting when the weather turns.

The 12th CPH:DOX Denmark

This November, film buffs can be seen queuing in cinemas all over Copenhagen again for the Copenhagen Film Festival, the largest and most awaited documentary film festival in all of Northern Europe. Started in 2003, this eleven-day festival features over 180 documentary films from around the world made by acclaimed directors and by aspiring talents. Much like other film festivals around the world, the CPH:DOX is a cultural initiative that aims to promote innovation and creativity in the genres of nonfiction, art cinema and experimental film.

Koge Bugt Strandpark

The Koge Bay Beach Park between Avedore and Hundige is one popular beach destination for the locals, not only for the myriad of opportunities for recreational activities but also because it is strategically close to Copenhagen. The park is actually made up of a seven-kilometer stretch of artificial dunes over the northern part of Koge Bay with a sandy beach and several man-made lagoons and small lakes. Opened in 1980, the beach park was built to provide a leisure destination for the population as well as a protection against flooding for the surrounding suburbs of Copenhagen.

The Royal Cast Collection

A branch of the Statens Museum for Kunst (National Gallery of Denmark), the Royal Cast Collection can be considered as a precursor to the famous Madame Tussaud’s Wax Museum. It is a massive collection of some of the oldest plaster casts and sculpture representing over 4000 years of history.
