Denmark is in the forefront of the green movement. From its bicycle lifestyle and green buildings to its electric cars, Denmark is indeed leading the way in helping preserve Mother Earth.

Apart from the electric cars and buses that you can use to go sightseeing, Copenhagen also now has its electric-powered boats. The electricity that powers these batteries comes from the offshore wind farm outside of Copenhagen.

If you’d like to tour Copenhagen, both the old and the new areas, take the DFDS Canal Tours which uses these electric boats. In fact, this type of boat has been so successful that DFDS plans to use it for the long term and eventually phase out his diesel-fueled boats.

Th first electric boat is the “Den Grimme Ælling”, named after Hans-Christian Andersen's story The Ugly Duckling. It is powered by lithium batteries which can provide enough electricity for a full day in service. The batteries charge at night when there is less pressure on the power grid and where the level of green electricity is at its highest.

Den Grimme Ælling, which can carry up to 170 passengers, has been converted into an electrically powered boat by Gilleleje Bådbyggeri (Gilleleje Boat Builders Yard).

In fact, DFDS Canal currently has 16 boats, all with names from the fairy tales of Danish writer Hans Christian Andersen, servicing over 700,000 visitors per year.

DFDS operates different canal tours, offering something for evey mood. There’s the guided sightseeing tour which is done in both Danish and English on an open boat so you can enjoy the fresh air.

Another type is the waterbus hop-on-hop-off tour which allows you to plan your own trip around the capital city’s harbor. You can then use the waterbus to visit interesting sites situated along the harbor and the canals.

If you’re a big fan of jazz music, the jazz cruise tour is perfect for you. This tour will let you enjoy one and a half hours of live jazz performed in front of you as you’re sailing through the canals.

Finally, the dinner cruise is the right tour to take if you want a romantic moment with your partner. You can do this on board the classic restaurant boat which serves sumptuous meals complete with your choice of wine, beer, coffee or tea.

So remember, when you ride on these electric-powered boats, you not only support the green movement but you get to enjoy your time with friends – completely without noise or smoke.
