JK Rowling Accepts Danish Award

If there’s one female author who has captivated children and adults alike around the world with her books, it has to be JK Rowling. Famous for her Harry Potter series, this British author is indeed very talented and well recognized worldwide for her many achievements.

Awards have also been pouring for Rowling which is not surprising at all. For this year 2010 alone, this Harry Potter author has already earned several awards including getting the top spot in the Most Influential Women list of Great Britain.

Denmark has also given JK Rowling due recognition. For the first ever Hans Christian Andersen Literature Prize, Denmark has chosen the British writer to be the most worthy recipient. The prize is awarded to a living author whose achievements can be compared to the famous Danish author Hans Christian Andersen. According to the judges, Rowling’s characters in her fiction stories are sure to endure for more generations to come. The appeal of figures such as Harry Potter, Hagrid, Dumbledore and Draco Malfoy can be compared to Andersen’s Ugly Duckling, Little Mermaid and Thumbelina. 

JK Rowling received the award herself along with the cash prize which amounted to 60,000 sterling pounds. The awarding ceremony took place in Odense, Denmark where Hans Christian Andersen was born.

The Harry Potter writer described her feeling as deeply honored for receiving the prize. She revealed her admiration as well to Andersen in particular his eternal characters that she described as “indestructible.”

Hans Christian Andersen is the man behind such famous stories as The Little Mermaid, The Ugly Duckling among 160 fairy tales and poems.  He died in 1875.

The Hans Christian Andersen Literature Award is different from the Andersen medal also considered to be the Nobel Prize for children’s literature.

Here’s a little trivia about Rowling and Andersen. Because of their great popularity, both were able to inspire amusement centers such as the theme park in Shanghai in honor Hans Christian Andersen and the Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Orlando, Florida.
